School Lunch Debt

I'm ashamed when I can't afford lunch. I go hungry and wishing I could have the same. I just want to be treated like everyone else.
Elementary Student
A lot of the times School lunch is the only meal a child gets to eat. School lunch debt can have significant impacts on children and their education. When students accumulate debt for their school meals, they can feel embarrassed and ashamed, which can lead to stress and anxiety. This can in turn negatively affect their ability to focus in the classroom and their overall academic performance.
Moreover, some schools have policies in place where students with lunch debt are given a different meal or are not served at all. This can lead to hunger and malnutrition, which can negatively impact students’ health, energy levels, and attention in the classroom. The stigma attached to not being able to pay for lunch can also lead to bullying and further shame for the affected students.
School lunch debt can have serious effects on children and their education. It is important for schools and communities to find ways to provide support for families struggling to pay for lunch, such as offering free or reduced-price meals, and eliminating lunch shaming practices. Providing nutritious meals for all students should be a priority, as it is essential for their well-being and academic success.
